As part of our new approach following COVID the School Readiness Team have started some face to face sessions working with parents and babies 0-6 months at children’s centres across Middlesbrough. Families are invited to these Amazing Babies sessions through our scheduled IAG calls; following them registering the birth of their baby, at the 6-8 weeks and at 3-4 months follow-up points. The sessions are focused around supporting parents to support their babies early language and literacy.
They have a very clear structure and offer an opportunity for peer support, to share key messages around baby’s development, and to give ideas for activities they can replicate in the home using everyday household items rather than expensive toys and there is also a focus on parental wellbeing.
Parents have reported feeling more confident and knowledge as a result of attending these sessions. Comments include –
“I loved meeting new mums and learning how simple household objects are good for providing learning and sensory experiences for my baby”
“I have liked the sessions being structured as we knew what to expect every week and if it was a normal group I would not have really known what to do or had the confidence to play with Hudson on my own”
“I’ve learnt some songs and how to make simple toys and sensory things to play with at home which was really useful”
“I have learnt more nursery rhymes to sing to him. I’m also going to start taking him to the library”
